![]() | ![]() Savant SCD 2024 Arthur Blythe Spirits In The Field $13.00 Order | ![]()
![]() |
It is a difficult tightrope to walk when producing art that is 'of the moment' yet acknowledges its past. Only a certain type of artist can concoct the perfect blend -- modern, yet non-alienating, traditional, yet not anachronistic. Such an artist is Arthur Blythe. Cut from the same cloth as Earl Bostic, Lou Donaldson and Hank Crawford, Blythe was cited by JAZZTIMES Magazine as "the magic figure of reconciliation, the force for consensus, that modern jazz has been looking for in vain since the death of John Coltrane in 1967." For his Savant debut Arthur offers a live gig performed at the famed Amsterdam jazz Mecca, the Bim Huis. Joining him is drummer/producer Cecil Brooks III and the wildly imaginative Bob Stewart on tuba. The unlikely trio produces a wide variety of tone colors and textures and swings out mightily. Featuring tunes by Don Pullen, Bob Stewart and Arthur himself, this exuberant record will attract a great deal of attention from press and radio alike.
Arthur Blythe- saxophone; Bob Stewart- tuba; Cecil Brooks III- drums
Tracks: One Mint Julip; Miss Nancy; Odessa; Rambler; Spirits In The Field; Lenox Avenue Breakdown; Ah George, We Hardly Knew You; Break Tune #2

![]() | |
![]() |
Some cats just seem to fall out of bed swinging, full of fire and forever seeking those flames. Call them the good groove merchants, and make sure you include Cecil Brooks III in this exclusive coterie. One thing you can always count on when Cecil Brooks sits down to the drums, regardless of the context, the music will snap, crackle, pop, and most of all...it'll swing! The five extended selections on this record are an apt reflection of this agreeable intersection of an ebullient leader, a collection of skillful players, and comfort of place. Featuring John Hicks, perhaps the hardest-hitiing pianist in jazz today (and one of the busiest), Don Braden, questionably one of the most underestimated tenor players of our time and others, Cecil puts the band through their paces before a full house at New York's famed jazz venue, Sweet Basil.
Cecil BrooksIII- drums & leader; Don Braden-tenor saxophone; Riley Mullins- trumpet; John Hicks- piano; Dwayne Dolphin- bass.

![]() | |
![]() |
Much has been written about Chicago's role in the history of jazz. It has been home to all time greats from Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines at the Lincoln Gardens and the Grand Terrace to Benny Goodman's Orchestra, followed by Gene Ammons and the super saxophonists of the bebop and hard bop era, then on to the cultural genius of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Throughout it all there has been the Freeman family: George Freeman, Earl "Von" Freeman, and Bruz Freeman. George on guitar, along with brother Von on saxophone, the Freemans have been the First Family of Chicago jazz for half of the 20th century. Even so, as Chicago moves into the 21st century George Freeman, and the Freeman family, here surrounded by other Chicago stalwarts are still swinging and leading the way. Vocalist Rene Elling thought enough of the Freeman's to drop by the sessions and can be heard on "At Long Last Love" and Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar."
George Freeman- guitar & leader; Von Freeman- tenor saxophone; Maurice Brown- trumpet; Gerey Johnson- guitar; Curtis Prince- drums; Kurt Elling/ Rene Marie- vocals.
Tracks: Little
Langley; Orange Chair Tango; Dombei; Sneaky Soul; That Dirty Thang; Wang!;

General consensus is that Winard Harper is one of the most dynamic
drummers in jazz today. Besides rock-solid rhythm, a prerequisite for any drummer, Winard possesses an extremely keen ear for percussive

instruments into the mix. The great Carrie Smith appears with Winard & Co., along with Wycliffe Gordon, George Cables and others. Pop favorites
("World On a String"), jazz standards (Bobby Timmons' "Moanin'") and original tunes grace Winard's latest, and Carrie Smith delivers a powerful
rendition of "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing", the Afro-American National Anthem.

![]() | ![]() Savant SCD 2033 Bill Heid Dark Secrets $13.00 Order | ![]()
![]() |
Jazz history contains a long list of great jazzspielers who are technically proficient and pleasing to the
ear. The list of those artists who truly changed the technique and sound of their chosen instrument is a much shorter list indeed. Pee Wee Russell comes to mind; Coltrane,
of course; and while his name may not be quite as widely known as the aforementioned, Bill Heid must be placed in their company. Emerging from the Don Paterson/Larry Young
school of playing, Bill has succeeded in developing a new sound for the Hammond keyboard, successfully transposing the hard-bop licks, once thought the exclusive property of
horn players, to the organ. Dark Secrets is a hard-driving, take-no-prisoners session in Bill's favorite medium: the organ quartet. Long-time friends and colleagues Scott
"E-Dog" Peterson on tenor, Joe Magnarelli on trumpet and Randy Gelespie on drums join Bill for what will surely be one of the hottest organ records of the year.

One of the most satisfying aspects of collecting jazz recordings is to watch and monitor a musician's artistic evolution. Starting out as one of the most exciting,
cutting-edge bass players in jazz, Lonnie Plaxico has morphed into a profound musical thinker as is evidenced on this recording, his first for the Savant label. Respected in the industry Lonnie has collaborated with Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey,
Steve Coleman, Jack DeJohnette and others. His multidirectional talent has attracted the likes of Grammy-Winning Cassandra Wilson, who has entrusted Lonnie with the responsibility of being her music director. For this challenging debut recording,
Lonnie has surrounded himself with the elite of the New York jazz scene: saxophonist Don Braden, pianist Eric Lewis (winner of the prestigious 1999 Thelonious Monk Piano Competition), trumpeter Ralph Alessi, Blue Note keyboardist Jason Moran and others.

The string quartet has always been thought of as a
classical music medium. While there are other
laudable quartets who have made the crossover into
more popular music, few, if any, actually improvise
in the true jazz idiom. The QUARTETTE INDIGO is the
exception - their improvisations are not written
out and their choice of repertoire ranges from jazz
standards ("A Night in Tunisia," So
What), to ragtime (Eubie Blake's "Fizz
Water') and even the Presley favorite, "Hound
Dog." These selections benefit from the myriad
colors produceable by the string quartet and do they
know how to swing!

Musical collaborations between vocalists and instrumentalists are fairly common in jazz. One can count on merely half a hand, however, those collaborations where the vocalist and jazzman could support, compliment and
embellish the other's thoughts as if second nature: Billie Holiday/Lester Young, Etta Jones/Houston Person and perhaps one or two more. To that list we must add Irene Reid and Charles Earland. This, the third joint
outing for the duo, finds them in a series of tunes tailor made for them both. Dinah Washington's "Long John Blues" (aka "The Dentist") and "If I Never Get to Heaven", "Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean," Fats Domino's
mega-hit, "I'm Walkin'" and others get the 'Uptown treatment from Charlie and Irene. The usual suspects are back for this session, Eric Alexander, James Rotondi and Greg Rockingham. This time out, Charles has added
another tenor in the person of Mike Karn, giving the whole proceeding a little big band feel. Get on the line to buy your subway tokens, and come "Uptown" with Irene and Charles. You're in for quite a ride!

Joined by Eric Alexander on tenor, Henry Johnson on guitar and others, Norman leads the group through
