Winard Harper
Faith
$13.00
Order

General consensus is that Winard Harper is one of the most dynamic drummers in jazz today. Besides rock-solid rhythm, a prerequisite for any drummer, Winard possesses an extremely keen ear for percussive color, drawing a myriad number of sounds from not only the traditional trap set, but incorporating the exotic sounds of traditional African instruments into the mix. The great Carrie Smith appears with Winard & Co., along with Wycliffe Gordon, George Cables and others. Pop favorites ("World On a String"), jazz standards (Bobby Timmons' "Moanin'") and original tunes grace Winard's latest, and Carrie Smith delivers a powerful rendition of "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing", the Afro-American National Anthem.

Bill Heid
Da Girl

Bill Heid has come along again with a much-needed dose of the real thing right on the heels of a New York Times article extolling the 'rebirth' of the B-3. Emerging from the Don Patterson/Larry Young school of playing, Bill has succeeded in developing a totally unique sound for the Hammond, successfully transposing the hard-bop licks, once thought the exclusive property horn players to the organ. There's hope, passion and harsh reality in Bill Heid's music. That's because it comes from the true source and contains no artificial ingredients.

Dark Secrets
$13.00

Jazz history contains a long list of great jazzspielers who are technically proficient and pleasing to the ear. The list of those artists who truly changed the technique and sound of their chosen instrument is a much shorter list indeed. Pee Wee Russell comes to mind; Coltrane, of course; and while his name may not be quite as widely known as the aforementioned, Bill Heid must be placed in their company. Emerging from the Don Paterson/Larry Young school of playing, Bill has succeeded in developing a new sound for the Hammond keyboard, successfully transposing the hard-bop licks, once thought the exclusive property of horn players, to the organ. Dark Secrets is a hard-driving, take-no-prisoners session in Bill's favorite medium: the organ quartet. Long-time friends and colleagues Scott "E-Dog" Peterson on tenor, Joe Magnarelli on trumpet and Randy Gelespie on drums join Bill for what will surely be one of the hottest organ records of the year.

GEORGE BENSON wrote of this recording: "Get ready for some excitement! Three of my favorite musicians have gotten together for some slam-dunk, get-it-right creative music that I know you're going to appreciate!" Bill Heid pays tribute to his heroes of the B-3 (Don Patterson, Larry Young and others) with a batch of imaginative original tunes (and one Wes Montgomery classic) backed by Hall-of-Famer Perry Hughes (formerly with Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, et al) and drummer Randy Gelespie (formerly with Jack Mc Duff, Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino and others). This one really cooks!

One of the most satisfying aspects of collecting jazz recordings is to watch and monitor a musician's artistic evolution. Starting out as one of the most exciting, cutting-edge bass players in jazz, Lonnie Plaxico has morphed into a profound musical thinker as is evidenced on this recording, his first for the Savant label. Respected in the industry Lonnie has collaborated with Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Steve Coleman, Jack DeJohnette and others. His multidirectional talent has attracted the likes of Grammy-Winning Cassandra Wilson, who has entrusted Lonnie with the responsibility of being her music director. For this challenging debut recording, Lonnie has surrounded himself with the elite of the New York jazz scene: saxophonist Don Braden, pianist Eric Lewis (winner of the prestigious 1999 Thelonious Monk Piano Competition), trumpeter Ralph Alessi, Blue Note keyboardist Jason Moran and others. This is eloquent, non-compromising music played with virtuosity and take-no-prisoners enthusiasm. The gauntlet has been thrown...accept the challenge.

Quartet Indigo
Afrika! Afrika!
$13.00
Order

The string quartet has always been thought of as a classical music medium. While there are other laudable quartets who have made the crossover into more popular music, few, if any, actually improvise in the true jazz idiom. The QUARTETTE INDIGO is the exception - their improvisations are not written out and their choice of repertoire ranges from jazz standards ("A Night in Tunisia," “So What”), to ragtime (Eubie Blake's "Fizz Water') and even the Presley favorite, "Hound Dog." These selections benefit from the myriad colors producible by the string quartet and do they know how to swing!

Ever since Eric Reed started popping up in Wynton Marsalis's small groups in the late 1980's and eventually replaced Marcus Roberts at the piano in the early 1990s, he has impressed listeners with his style and sense of musical self-direction. Ken Franckling has dubbed Eric Reed, "one of the most inventive, exciting - and promising - young players on the scene today," and his Savant debut provides ample justification for Franckling's enthusiasm. The trio setting has brought out the best in pianists from Jelly Roll to John Hicks and Eric's comrades Dwayne Burno and Cecil Brooks III at once support, stimulate and draw inspiration from the pianist/leader. Rarely has a program been as carefully planned as the wonderful selections on this session - Monk, Miles, McCartney are represented along with the Duke, Frederic Chopin and Gordon Jenkins' hauntingly beautiful ballad, "Goodbye." Without a doubt, this is one of the tastiest piano discs you'll hear in 2002.

It takes a vocalist full of passion and power to front a B-3 ensemble. Irene Reid is just such a vocalist. Called "The Queen of Uptown Jazz" Irene has been doing her thing for some time - "I've found my groove" as she likes to say. This, Irene's fourth CD for Savant displays the depth of her passion perhaps better than any other. Of course, the Reid-type classic, street-smart and world-wise tunes are here - "I Took the Backdoor Out," "Ain't Nobody Sleepin' in My Bed" and the title tune. But also included are such intensely personal numbers such as "I've Gotta Be Me" and "The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me" showing that Irene Reid is truly a musical gem of many brightly-shining facets. With Eric Alexander and James Rotondi leading the frontline and the hip B-3 voicings of Bobby Forrester laying the foundation, this recording will no doubt appeal to Irene's legion of fans, both uptown and down!

Musical collaborations between vocalists and instrumentalists are fairly common in jazz. One can count on merely half a hand, however, those collaborations where the vocalist and jazzman could support, compliment and embellish the other's thoughts as if second nature: Billie Holiday/Lester Young, Etta Jones/Houston Person and perhaps one or two more. To that list we must add Irene Reid and Charles Earland. This, the third joint outing for the duo, finds them in a series of tunes tailor made for them both. Dinah Washington's "Long John Blues" (aka "The Dentist") and "If I Never Get to Heaven", "Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean," Fats Domino's mega-hit, "I'm Walkin'" and others get the 'Uptown treatment from Charlie and Irene. The usual suspects are back for this session, Eric Alexander, James Rotondi and Greg Rockingham. This time out, Charles has added another tenor in the person of Mike Karn, giving the whole proceeding a little big band feel. Get on the line to buy your subway tokens, and come "Uptown" with Irene and Charles. You're in for quite a ride!

Norman Simmons came out of Chicago in distinguished keyboard company, along with his contemporaries Junior Mance, Muhal Richard Abrams, Jodie Christian and Ramsey Lewis. Quickly, Norman became the accompanist of choice of an impressive list of jazz singers, including Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, Anita O'Day and Joe Williams. Nothing hones a pianist's sense of color, rhythm and harmonic subtlety more than accompanying vocalists. Norman brings that experience to his solo playing, giving unique insight and meaning to any song he chooses to play. Joined by Eric Alexander on tenor, Henry Johnson on guitar and others, Norman leads the group through a thoughtful program of standards and originals, including "My Silent Love", the haunting "Harlem Nocturne," as well as a few of his own tunes, not least among them, "I'm Your Boogie Man."
